Concept
In the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, Duisburg is characterized by its leading position in the iron and steel producing industry and the largest inland port in the world. Industrialization from the 19th century onwards has shaped the urban development image of Duisburg to this day.
The trapezoidal site on the Düsseldorfer Landstraße / Wedauer Straße is situated next to a historic brick building which houses the “House of Entrepreneurs”. On the other side of the street there is a residential area as well as the Waldfriedhof cemetery and a subway station.
The East side of the Düsseldorfer Landstraße in the area Jesuitenstraße – Wedauer Straße is characterized by single buildings and open construction respectively. The present design takes up this principle and continues it with two individual buildings, a 3-storey and a 5-storey building. The three-storey restaurant and office building approximately takes up the height of the neighbouring “Haus der Unternehmer” and thus creates a true-to-scale “distance piece” to the hotel building, which has five standard storeys and whose corner to the Düsseldorfer Landstraße / Wedauer Straße is emphasized by a superimposed storey to emphasize the special situation of the corner.
The facade design makes a clear reference to the industrial architecture of modernism. The materiality and feel of the aluminum panels refers to the metal industry. Since their employers’ association is based on the neighboring property, a direct bridge is created. In addition, the rounded and glazed facades create modern dynamic structures. The result is a clearly structured, contemporary architecture that creates an exciting composition with the existing building.
In addition to 180 rooms, the hotel has a spacious entrance and bar area, a breakfast room, conference rooms and a sauna and fitness area on the sixth floor. In the neighboring building there is a brewery restaurant on the first floor with a terrace area and two office floors on the upper floors.
