Tokyo E-Prix Circuit

Already since 2013, a Tokyo E-Prix circuit has been under discussion. The petrol-free Formula E cars serve to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable mobility in urban environments. In Tokyo, the organization of an E-Prix was therefore seen as a step towards the city’s ambitious goal of ensuring that all new cars are petrol-free by 2030. Hosting such a race would not only highlight technological innovation but also reinforce Tokyo’s commitment to environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality.

After nearly a decade of negotiations and planning, an agreement was finally reached in 2022 between Formula E officials and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to organize a race in the spring of 2024. This marked a significant milestone for both the city and the sport, as it would be the first Formula E event ever held in Japan. The creation of the Tokyo E-Prix circuit was celebrated as a major step forward in bringing electric motorsport to a key global capital.

Tilke Engineers & Architects was contracted to create the Tokyo layout and began planning immediately. After conducting multiple feasibility studies and proposing various track configurations, the final decision was made to build a street circuit around Tokyo Big Sight, the city’s International Exhibition Centre. The initial plan featured 18 turns and a length of approximately 2.5 km, but this was later revised and extended by two additional corners to improve racing dynamics and safety.

Since summer 2023, the Tilke team had been on-site regularly, supervising preparations and construction to ensure everything met the high standards required for international competition. Their presence was crucial in coordinating with local authorities and adapting the design to the urban infrastructure.

The first Tokyo E-Prix took place as planned on 30 March 2024. It attracted thousands of spectators and marked a historic moment for Formula E, showcasing the Tokyo E-Prix circuit as a symbol of innovation and Tokyo as a forward-thinking, environmentally conscious city on the global stage.
