The Circuit International Automobile Moulay el Hassan is located in Morocco’s capital Marrakech. The track, which had already been hosting some WTCC and Formula 2 races since 2009 was originally 4.5 kilometers long at the time, but it was considered particularly difficult and dangerous because there were no sufficiently large run-off zones. The track no longer met FIA standards. In 2012 a redesign of the track was commissioned by Tilke.
The transformation of the formerly permanent track into a partly temporary track was a condition for staging further WTCC races. The result was a shortened FIA Grade 2 race track that runs through the former paddock as a semi-permanent circuit, offering racing enthusiasts a venue for both international and local (amateur) races. It was completed in 2016 and since then the track was used year-round to promote racing locally. Since the 2016/17 season, Circuit Moulay El Hassan has been part of the FIA Formula E racing calendar several times.
