Baku City Circuit
BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
In 2016, the Baku City Circuit hosted a Formula 1 race for the first time, called the “European Grand Prix”. Since then, the race in Azerbaijan’s capital has been part of the Formula 1 racing calendar.
With a length of over six kilometers, the temporary street circuit is one of the longest tracks on the current Formula 1 racing calendar after the Jeddah F1 Street Circuit, which will be completed in 2021. The varied track winds through the beautiful historic old town of Baku and modern parts of the metropolis.
The start-finish straight runs parallel to the Caspian Sea promenade and along Baku’s impressive government building. The first sector, which runs through the government quarter and along modern architecture, is characterized by several 90-degree turns. The most challenging part of the route then leads through the old city in tight sequences of turns. Passing several landmarks such as the Maiden’s Tower, the track winds its way through the city with a track width of only seven meters. A very fast, wide section of track with two full-throttle corners and a two-kilometer straight leads back to the start-finish straight. This sector makes the Baku City Circuit one of the fastest tracks in the history of Formula 1, with a top speed of 360 km/h.
