Daimler AG Testing Technology Center Immendingen

Since 2018, the Daimler AG has operated a cutting-edge testing and technology center (PTZ) located south of Immendingen, Baden-Württemberg, boasting 32 distinct test modules.

The conception of this facility stemmed from Daimler’s vision to establish a holistically crafted area for vehicle development and experimentation. Each module within the center is meticulously designed to meet specialized requirements in geometry, surface quality and homogeneity, ensuring precise experimental conditions for vehicle tests.

Tilke GmbH & Co. KG, responsible for planning 30 modules, worked closely with the Daimler AG, providing comprehensive services from planning to completion. Beginning in February 2012, construction commenced in 2015, with all projects successfully finalized by September 2019.

Notable features of the center include provisions for different user types across modules and efficient cross-connections between neighboring units. Close collaboration with end-users was imperative to replicate existing reference tracks of Daimler AG accurately, incorporating elements such as irrigation and specialized surfaces. For instance, the center includes a dedicated 4×4 module, a BERTHA area designed for highly automated vehicles, and a handling course inspired by the world-renowned Nürburgring.

The technology center was built within a former barracks complex. Facilities such as offices, research and development, tire center, and workshops are within close proximity to each other.

Throughout the planning and construction phases, environmental considerations were paramount, with particular emphasis on wildlife welfare, species protection and landscape preservation. Structural measures, including a 37-meter-wide wildlife bridge and a wildlife corridor, were implemented to facilitate testing activities while safeguarding local fauna.

Also, stringent regulations governing noise and dust emissions were adhered to during both construction and operation. Spanning approximately 520 hectares and divided into two construction fields, the site posed logistical challenges, necessitating coordinated efforts across multiple tender units.

Topographic variations, with elevations ranging from 700 to 820 meters above sea level, presented further complexities. Over 4 million cubic meters of earth were excavated and managed, with strict protocols in place for soil storage and covering. The presence of solid Jurassic rock and Quaternary / Tertiary loose rocks, combined with the area’s karst terrain, required extensive groundwork to ensure structural stability. In total, the road construction encompassed 12 km of unpaved road, 45 km of asphalt road and 10.5 km of widened asphalt road, covering an expansive 28.5 hectares that provides Daimler with ample space for various purposes.

Notably, road markings and guardrail designs were tailored to accommodate international testing protocols, facilitating evaluations of vehicle detection systems across diverse geographical contexts.
